HOW TO GET TO HERTFORD HEATH

By car:

Getting to the Village by car is pretty easy if you live in the South and East of the U.K.  The Village lies between two major trunk roads - the A1 which goes from London to Scotland, and the A10 which connects London with Cambridge.

These two roads are in turn connected by the A414 which links Hatfield and Ware about 25 miles north of central London.  The A414 runs through the county town, Hertford, and in Hertford the B1197 runs directly to Hertford Heath where it forms London Road, the western boundary of the village.

By taxi:

For a local taxi company call: Hertford Heath Cabs on 01992 53 53 51

By train:

Hertford Heath has no railway links of its own, so rail travellers must travel to one of the two Hertford stations - Hertford North from Kings Cross and Moorgate or Hertford East from Liverpool Street.   The journey time is less than an hour from the termini.  A taxi from Hertford will cost about £5.00

By bus.

The Route 324 links Hertford and Hoddesdon via Hertford Heath, but do note that it doesn't run in the evenings or on Sundays

VILLAGE MAP

The village map was produced in 1997.  It was drawn and illustrated by Robin Mackervoy .  Measuring 27" by 19" the map details the recognised footpaths, names the woods and on the reverse describes the history and activities of Hertford Heath.  Copies are available from Carolyn Morgan (01992 - 581994) folded or flat - only £1.00 each.  Click to view an extract of the map.

VILLAGE HISTORY

A village history was drawn up by the late Esme Nix for the Village Information Pack in 1989.  The pack was distributed to all homes in Hertford Heath.  All the information it contained has been included (and updated) on this site.  Click to read the history.

OLD MAPS OF THE VILLAGE

The research into the old maps was prompted by the discovery of an abandoned well in London Road.

The 1898 maps show that the village had maybe dozens of wells.  It might be worth checking to see if there is one in your back garden before you dig too deep.  Other curiosities are the clearly marked 'Union Boundary'.  It was obviously important then but what was the Union?

Also many of the older residents speak of the two pubs which used to be in Downfield Road (then known as The Street).  Our four current locals are marked on all maps (with a few name changes obviously) but there is no sign of The Two Brewers and its neighbour. The 1899 map, which covers all of the village, seems to have The Crown (aka The Silver Fox) down as a shop (maybe the current Post Office) but the 1898 map of Hertford Heath has The Crown and no shop, but it does have the letters PO nearby.  The Post Office was, for many years, in what is now the Londis shop, but was it originally in its present site?

If you know the answer to these questions or think of any more, please let me know either by e-mail clerk@hertfordheath.com  or by phone – 01992 581994.

A belated thank you to Mark Gobell of Stanstead Abbots who wrote suggesting that the Union Boundaries were the actual boundaries of adjacent Poor Law Unions.   Prior to 1834 workhouses were usually the responsibility of the local Parish but after the 1834 Poor Law Act, Poor Law Unions were formed grouping several Parishes into geographical Unions.  Ware & Hertford Poor Law Unions were both formed in 1835.  The links below provide a list of Parishes included in each Union.
