To celebrate the millennium, the Parish Council purchased two village signs.  One is outside the Village Hall in London Road and the other is on the Village Green opposite The Goat.  The signs were designed and built by Brian Gaze of Walsham-le-Willows (01359 - 230104) and installed by Roy Phypers of Woodland Road.  The sign on the Village Green was unveiled on Sunday 27th August 2000 by Carolyn Morgan, then Chairman of the Parish Council.

At the very top of the sign is a Hart , the small deer which is the symbol of the county of Hertford.

Next is the village church, Holy Trinity.

To the right of centre is  a beacon, this no longer exists but the village was the location  of one of a string of beacons all across the country which were to be lit to signal a Napoleonic invasion. (See village history)

Below the church on the right is The Goat, one of four pubs in the village which provide excellent eating and drinking.  In the centre is the drinking fountain which was one of the early sources of generally available potable water.   The fountain no longer works, but every so often suggestions are made that it should be re-activated.  To the left of the fountain is the war memorial, which is not on the main village green but on a smaller green on the edge of London Road.  Every year on the Sunday nearest to Armistice Day,  the 11th November, a brief service is held here to remember those from the village who died in action in the two World Wars.

The Village Green once had a pond and shown drinking at it are a muntjac deer, which are common in the nearby woods, and a moorhen.

At the bottom of the sign is Haileybury, one of the two excellent schools in the village.

(A further set of signs has been produced by the school and shown below.)

A third set of village signs!

Following an idea of Mary Bourne,  Brian Gaze (from Walsham-le-Willows who designed and created the village signs)  was kind enough to let us have the formers he used in that process. Mary passed them on to Hertford Heath School who have designed a totally original colour scheme in which to paint them.  And very fine it looks too.

In future years we may be wondering how famous artists of their day started.  This may be a clue.....
